It REALLY DEPENDS on the Hawaiian shirt. There are ones that look generic, fake, and cheap. The real ones are made out of a textured cotton that you can only get over there. The higher-end ones are usually more tastefully done, more of an artistic look, often designed by a local designer there, or a company like Tommy Bahama.
We live in Florida and love the aloha shirts. My husband's closet is filled with them. But we prefer certain styles - not the little floral ones, we like the vertical bands of designs or other interesting colorful "picture shirts." Most of them are vintage or semi-vintage, and made in Hawaii. We don't like the cheap knockoffs.

Exactly. The cheap, five dollar special from the souvenir store is going to look just like that, cheap. A nice one from say Tommy Bahama will look sharp and classy (provided you buy the correct fit and have the body for it).
I don't know if you knew this but Tony Bahama shirts are knock offs of Tommy Bahama shirts.
Italians love them !
