I'm with you, Sheena! But men---you gotta love them. We women obsess over every last detail, but men are so much more comfortable in their own skin, regardless of what they are wearing or their body shape.
I love being comfortable---but I think pants are more appropriate for anything cultural (including art exhibits). And even then, maybe the black sneakers, but can't the white socks just be used for athletic purposes as they were intended? I'm assuming he does have some non-white socks....
Black? argyle? brown? navy? striped? None of them make it with shorts.
Buy him white converse to wear with the white socks with shorts, same style so he'll be happy.
Save the back converse for long pants, or no show socks or sockless.
Why don't you wash the shorts with your whites and some bleach? That will be the end of those shorts. My hubby had a pink T-shirt that he refused to get rid of, insisting that it was actually more red than pink. So I borrowed it when I dyed my hair and it now has a number of stains all over it that won't come out. Needless to say that T-shirt is no more.

Hahahaha!! That's what I was thinking, assassination by washer. I think my grandma used that on my clothes a few times when I was a teen, but I can't prove it.
Why is it that some women always want to be in charge of what he wears? Why would you care what he wears? Will he embarrass you? He is who he is. If that is a dork, you are married to a dork. Get over it unless he is telling to to stick some tissue in your bra so your boobs don't look so droopy. Let him be himself for better or for worse. Now, if when you get ready, if he is all over your looks, then maybe the two of you have a thing going with it. But if he is like most guys, he really doesn't need to have you on the opposite side of his choices or his looks.

I'm agreeing with you, and I'm not a guy.
I realize an art exhibit would call for something more formal; but in general, I'm amazed at how simplistic men's fashion is compared to women's and how there's all these hidden rules of what guys are "allowed" to wear. I'm certain women have several clothes he can do without...why not let him have a pink shirt and his favorite shorts (in general, not for the exhibit)?
I think if he could agree to wearing something more appropriate for the event, he should be able to wear the shorts at elsewhere/casual encounters.

Thanks!
As the husband of a successful professional artist, I have been to probably more than 100 exhibitions of the wife's cronies at all places from the top galleries in the country to new artists' showing at coffee shop.
It really doesn't matter what one wears. If anything: the more important the person, the more idiosyncratic they will be dressed.
