This phenomenon has many very plain looking, and even ugly men and women thinking they are attractive. Most are just average. I don't get the excitement about blond hair and blue eyes.

Neither do I. I agree. There are MANY inbred looking people with blond hair and blue eyes. Most are, in fact, boring looking.

However, I think the media proffers blonde hair/blue eyes as the standard of beauty for a woman and brown hair/brown eyes as the standard of handsomeness for a man. That's what it seems like.

Why is blond hair, blue eyes considered the standard of beauty for women and men
Who said it was? I must have missed that declaration.

This is a holdover ingrained from the early days of moviemaking and b&w photography before color film was in regular use. Light eyes and the shapes of blond hair showed up on the film (moreso on women where hairstyles were elaborate) whereas dark eyes and dark hair did not. Also, at that time, bleaching hair was relatively rare, so blonds even in the acting/modeling industry were a minority but got more jobs b/c they showed up on film, giving blonds overall a greater cachet in popular culture from about the turn of the century in 1900 or so.

Even today when you go club, you'll notice the blonds first because they simply show up better in low light situations even if blonds aren't your preference.

Since when? Blond hair and blue eyes have NOT been the standard of beauty since the 80's. Have a look at advertisements, TV commercials, sitcoms, glamour mags etc. Blonds no longer hold a monopoly in the media.

I have to disagree with that statement. I have lived all over the world and especially in many foreign countries where most people are dark skinned, have dark eyes, dark hair does someone like me stand out..(I have blond hair, blue eyes, and actually dark for a blond man)...and yes, many say I have nice hair and eyes............but, when I asked them out of curiosity....about what do they prefer in the coloring of a mate, girlfriend/boyfriend, wife/husband, etc...they all reply they want the same dark coloring. I am now overseas and do stick out because I am white..but, I have no market on having "movie star" looks or qualities. I am smart, intelligent and to be honest back in the States in Los Angeles I haven't dated a blond/blue eyed woman in so many years...my preference is olive, dark skinned woman, with hazel or brown eyes, brown to black hair......I don't know why but I find them more attractive, sexy, hot !!
