After-Shave like perfume smells very different on different skins ( we all have our own chemistry when it comes to scent) and you need to find what you think smells good on YOU. Though also everyone has a different olfactory system which means you will never get a unanimous opinion from everyone as we all perceive smells differently.
On Hubby I love :
L'eau d'Issey by Issey Miyake
Egoiste by Chanel
Cacharel pour Homme by Cacharel
Kouros by Yves St Laurent
Acqua di Gio by Armani

Those are some of my faves. The only scent I remember disliking very much was Grey Flannel. As long it is applied to a clean slate, you should be fine. If it's applied to skip taking a shower, well then no scent is going to attract females.
I prefer traditional woodsy, spicy or leathery scents although the trend now in men's fragrances seems to be toward "green" or cool fragrances. My husband wears Bulgari Man, Caswell & Massey's Sandalwood or Old Spice.
