Pretty much all of those calipoppy is posting look considerably prettier to me. Though as far as fashion goes, I generally prefer the 20-30s and even 40s over the 50s and 60s. But in this particular case, I think the more recent women pictured are indeed prettier.

I agree. Back to the little rich girl theory for white people pageants:

My guess is if those girls are American at that time they did not come from money families during that time.

Descendents of the slave trade and being what it was...they didn't buy ugly chicks to work in the house in general. It would be an interesting genealogy project to study the family tree in African American beauty contests. All the original tribes had different features. I wonder what tribe was dominate and how much mixed blood there was, and who may of been related to rich white owners that abused them.

it's amazing the difference between then and now:

I'm 23 and I like the style of the older photo more. They seem classier, more refined, and even pleasant to be around.

Miss Philadelphia's hair ... holy wow. It's hard for me to judge old photos because the makeup, hairstyles, and clothing are so different. It's really hard to picture what the people in them would look like now. A few nose jobs, different hair, lots of makeup, etc.

But that hair is pretty nuts.

In the pic above,I want Miss Canada's shape!!!.

To the poster who showed the African American pagent winners, they were beautiful

However, and I really hate to do this.....but just as you guys pointed out that the contestants in the Op's pics might have came from wealthy families(even though they were unattractive).
The black women posted look more mixed to me. Its just my opinion and someone actually touched on it above.
I dont see any afros or natural, unstraigtened hair. I do see pressed hair.

I think most of us would look like them without modern advances in makeup and surgery.
I think what we see on Tv isn't real
