Since I already know you're black, keep in mind, black people come in too many shades to make that assumption. I'm black. I've worn all kinds of unusual colors and have regularly gotten compliments. Though, this may be due to the shape and condition of my nails. Pastels actually look better on me than darker shades, which, yes, would be due to having a lighter complexion.
I'll see black women all the time who can pull off the most vibrant/bright colors of eye shadows and eye liners and it looks great on them! Since my skin is very fair (I try to sunbathe but it's gone in a week) I'm real particular about the shades I wear also. I keep my nails filed short so pastels and neutrals look best on me also.
I tend to do more "fun" colors on my toes because the polish seems to last longer. Too dark or too bright on my hands gets chipped up too quick. I still pick blues or purples or greens, but really light shades so the chips aren't as prominent.
I don't bother with my fingernails since they chip and break too easily. Plus I type/use keyboard shortcuts a lot and longer nails annoy me.
I do love bright blue shades on my toes though. My last pedicure was a bright turquoise colour. Since we're moving into autumn now, I probably won't get another pedi for a while.
I happened to look at the toes of a middle-aged woman and noticed she had blue polish on her toenails! Who started this fashion of painting nails green, blue, yellow, black, etc.? When I was growing up, about all the colors available were derived from red and brown.
I was always a french manicure woman and now I've branched out into colors. I've got a gold glitter on my toes. I also had them done on my nails but I don't think it looks right without my long acrylics on. However working in the food industry I can't have nails so it sucks
