From old pictures I've seen of people particularly from the 1940s-1960s era, people looked about 10 years older than their actual age. Teenagers aged 16-19 looked to be in their 20s. People in their early and mid 20s looked to be in their early and mid 30s. Late 20s-early 30s people looked to be almost 40.
I even saw this with Beaver's teacher from Leave it to Beaver. She was actually around 24 years old but I estimated her to be in her mid 30s.
I suppose it's due to the way people dressed then. Plus women fixed up their hair like the way many elderly women do now.

Of course they looked older. These are the same people who today have clogged arteries and heart disease from drowning everything in Crisco and deep frying everything under the sun, skin cancer from baking in the sun, have cirrosis of the liver from having 3 martini lunches plus one more for the road and emphysema from smoking 2 pack a day.
I noticed that too when I saw my mother's old high school yearbooks from the mid-1950s. Interestingly, I'm at the weird age of being in my late 40s where my peers who are the same age as me seem to either look healthy and fit like myself or they look 6-10 years older and with health issues. Interestingly, the people who are my same age and look much older have a very different diet and lifestyle. They seem to be more sedentary. They have 'meat and potatoes' or fast food type diets. And they also just seem to have an 'older' outlook or attitude on things... As I watch this happening around me, I'm totally convinced that it's lifestyle, diet, exercise, and attitude.

True..people dressed and acted in a more conservative fashion back then. Additionally, you probably have to factor in the Great Depression, WW2 and other events of that time that simply forced people to "act and look" older.
Plus, people married and had families at a younger age than they do today. Just my .02
I notice people that live & work on ranches or come from areas like New Mexico, AZ, Texas seem to look more weathered & older and have thick wrinkles on the backs of their necks from years of sun exposure
Also diseases now eradicated took a toll on the survivors.
