If I see someone wearing Birkenstocks and Tevas, with athletic/gym socks, I think it’s less offensive than seeing a guy’s hairy, smelly feet.

Why are sandals and socks bad? I can see it being dorky if you wore Tevas and, say, black dress socks, but Tevas and hiking or athletic socks: offensive or not?

My DH who is 66, would never wear socks with sandals. He has nicer feet then some women I see. And they don`t smell either.

I hope he returns the compliment.

It's not offensive to me. It just doesn't look good at all.

But hey, someone's gotta rock that look, so...

Socks with sandals is offensive? Not IMO. I guess some people bend over backwards to find reasons to be offended. Sad way to go through life...

Wearing sandals with socks isn't offensive; it's ugly and unfashionable to the point that that look is the butt of jokes.

There are two main reasons why the sandals and socks combination is almost universally derided by all socio-economic levels.

First of all, it doesn't match from a functional perspective. The purpose of sandals is to have an open foot design which offers greater comfort especially in warmer climates. Therefore wearing socks with sandals makes as much sense as wearing a tuxedo to go swimming in a pool.

Second, and most importantly, socks with sandals just looks horrible from an aesthetic perspective. It's like wearing a tank top over a long sleeved dress shirt.

It's illogical - if it is cool enough to need socks then it's too cool for sandals. If you really wanna wear sandals on a coolish day then be a man and skip the socks! Another level is that sandals are the most casual footwear - certainly black socks don't match that degree of casual. I guess if you have to wear socks with sandals at least make them white sports socks but yeah, it just looks dumb.

Or, if you want to wear socks, then wear the kind of shoes that go with socks (sneakers, boots, etc.) Sandals ain't it.
