I was vegan for two years and I don't buy the whole "go hogwild" or engage in as much cruelty as possible. If omni's are alerted to the cruelty of fur and want to preach about it, I totally support them. I'm not going to tell them "you eat meat so you might as well wear fur too." That's like telling an ovo-lacto that they might as well start eating meat since they haven't given up eggs or dairy. Everyone's a hypocrite to an extent...most people agree lying is wrong but I haven't yet met a person that hasn't told a lie. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Positive steps raise awareness for everyone. It's not so much about the abstention per se but the message it sends.
Some people call themselves vegans and eat veggieburgers sans cheese without inquiring whether the bun has un-vegan dough conditioners and if the veggie patty itself has dairy or eggs. Some people who call themselves vegan eat honey which is 100% un-vegan. It matters if you stand up for what you believe in, do the most to make yourself comfortable with your convictions and strive to improve every day.
