I think that's pretty gross. I imagine the only reason they appeared to "not care" was that they didn't want to be rude. Which you were, by dressing in such a manner.

I'm no saint, and I've run to the store in clothes that I wouldn't wear to work, but if I was out working in my yard and my neighbor said, "hey, come over! we're cooking out!" I'd certainly change into something not covered in dirt and grass clippings first.
Exactly.

You'd look well dressed at our house...

OP, how old are you? My only comment is that if you don't care enough to take pride in your appearance, why should anyone else care? Like it or not, your appearance says much about you and what you think of yourself...so, if you don't think you're worth taking care of, you may find yourself waiting a very long time for anyone else to care...you also may find that you get fewer and fewer invitations unless they are the very most casual kind.

Summa you people need to buy a stain stick .

I agree that, for the OP, this does not appear to be about clothes. I think you are trying to test one thing with your 'social experiment' but are really testing something else. Maybe you think you are testing whether your friends care about you, or whether you are invisible -- but really you are testing whether they will let you make your own life decisions and not interfere. Or something.

Me, I have clothes for when I leave the house and clothes for when I do not . My house contains cats, projects, a zillion cans of paint, and a big garden. It is not condicive to nice attire.

Right now I am lying on the couch in pj bottoms and a waffle shirt. And thick fuzzy socks because it is unseasonably cold .

Who knows, he may continue getting invitations because from the way he's presenting himself people might think he's eating cat food at home and feel sorry for him.

Once i went to the grocery store & was dressed in old jeans & a raggy t-shirt & a total stranger gave me $5.00. I declined but he insisted. I havent bought new clothes in many years & the last time i bought shoes was december 2010 & that was for work. I have had to glue the shoes together in certain areas but they still look good. Super glue works wonders.

I don't dress to impress in any way, shape, or form. Ill run to the hardwear store wearing soiled clothing if I'm into a project and I'll wear PJ pants to the carwash. I don't care because the people who see me opinions are of no consequence to me. However, I won't show up wearing soiled or compromised garments to a dinner invitation unless the person already saw me and knows that will be what I am wearing (if I don't have a change of clothes).
Stains imho especially on shirts are much worse than holes or bleach spots within reason but those are just my personal standards. I do dress rather sloppily on a regular basis but I always make sure I look decent if the situation requires it.

So that's what I can do to get an extra $5.00? Okay. I'll even wear a headscarf for effect.
