This is actually something I have studied a lot about! I am very conscious of what my body language says about me, so I always try to show confidence with my body language.
I have noticed in semi-social situations (kids soccer games, neighborhood moms) that a lot of women will fold their arms in front of them when they are speaking. If you ask them about it (I've asked my wife) and they'll say they're chilly or something (even if it is 95 degrees F outside.) I think it has something to do with protecting their personal space or not wanting to be open or something. It is very common.
Next time you are in one of these situations and you see two women talking to each other who arent' extremely close friends, notice how their arms are folded in front of them.
How does one show one is...say...self-confident...via body language
Easy. Head up. Steady eye contact when your attention is drawn. Body expanding. i.e: Wonder woman pose. Arms spread out above your head in a "woo hoo. I'm a winner!!!" V.
My body language says, don't talk to me, I want to be left alone.
^This.
I rush in & out of stores when grocery shopping, bc. I want to get it over with & get the bleep back home ASAP.
I've got agoraphobia, social anxiety, Asperger's & all that jazz-so it's no wonder that I feel so perpetually on the defense.
Can't decode other people's body language nor do I know what mine is saying, but in this case I've been told by people who were with me at the time.
Walk with a proper gait and always angle your feet slightly when standing is my advice.
You control body language and how others see you or you can not be mindful of it and advertise your every mood to others.
