Tim Gunn has really good commentary on the fashion industry in a recent interview. He talks about the reluctance of designers to create clothing larger than 14, vanity sizing and the lack of petite options.

It is pretty silly, just ready the threads here, so many people seem to think people larger than 12 or 14 or 16 should stay home or wear sacks till they lose enough weight to fit into "normal sizes." Meanwhile the average size is 14.

I am a bad example for petite because many average pants are short for me and I am average height. :P

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

I do not sympathize with the lack of petite options, as they are way more of those than tall options!

One of the sites they mentioned at the bottom of that article looks pretty interesting, for petite, tall, or plus sizes Shop Women Next time I need a dress, I think I'll order from them.

I have ordered from there. It is really cool, you can specify bra size, change the sleeves or the length and it is basically the same price as everywhere else.

True. But that is because, sadly, 2/3 of the population is overweight.

Perhaps but you still need cute, flattering and appropriate clothing.

My question is if this is such an issue, isn't this an incredibly untapped market?

The fashion industry has always worshiped at the altar of the ultra-thin.

Which isn't a problem on its own. But mainstream fashion is a different beast than high fashion and should really cater to the masses. Mainstream is failing if 50% of the the audience can't find their size.

Well as a tall woman (5'9"), it is nearly impossible to find pants with long inseams, so I sympathize there.

I'm a size 6 so, I can't say whether or not I've noticed a lack of sizes larger than a 12.
