Can't speak for others, but for me it is about the aesthetics of the name- basically how it sounds.

There are some names that just sound better to my ears than others.

There is also of course the "When Harry Met Sally" test ... for men's names, say "do it to me _____" and see if it sounds good. lol

In the police fines report of the local paper there was a person with the first name Kingkong. Somehow that just seems wrong. IMHO

Agree with most of the names posted already. Some names are so old that hardly anyone uses them anymore, and some times esp with names....they are better left in the past where they belong.

Our 90 year old Adeline also known as Aunt Dolly does much more than sit in the rocker knitting.
It is a beautiful name that goes with a beautiful, loving, giving woman whom we all adore.

The name is not as important as the person though and it also makes me wonder what others think of YOUR name.
Maybe they see you sitting in the cave completely excited that fire has been discovered and the wheel invented.

I grew up with Wojciechowskis, Znanieckis, and Chojnackis (the pronunciation of the last one in particular kills me). I happened to grow up amongst a bunch of Poles and other ethnic eastern Europeans, although my background and last name is decidedly more boring.

I knew one of these. "sha-NACK-ee". Of course, my dad used to call her "sha-NECK-ee"... never made sense.

What makes a name attractive or unattractive is largely a matter of opinion. But I'm with the people who talk about the "When Harry Met Sally" test. If you want to be less sexual about it, imagine a love scene out of an old black-and-white movie. Man takes woman in his arms, they gaze into each other's eyes lovingly, and say "Oh __________" (<--- insert name there)... if you can't see yourself doing that without silently laughing or gagging, it's an unattractive name.
