Good point.

Fasting is usually done for spiritual reasons - it really has no practical applications if done for weight control or physical improvement.

@Harrier:
"Fasting is usually done for spiritual reasons - it really has no practical applications if done for weight control or physical improvement"

Uh, no.
There actually DOES seem to be empirical evidence that modified fasting or caloric restriction CAN lead to weight control and ultimately has health benefits that translate into life extension.
I have been doing intermittent fasting (modified fast - others do the full monty) for almost a year and a half now with nothing but beneficial effects.
And, contrary to the ubiquitous belief that gorging is a common consequence, that ain't so either.
At least not in my experience.

There are several threads on this topic in the Diet and Weight Loss Forum.

I juice fast, twice a year, for 10 days. It is an exceptional experience and a healthy one as well. It requires a great deal of discipline and the benefits are enormous. There is much on the internet about this practice, the proper methods, and its benefits.

This should probably be in the health forum, but...

I've fasted for 2-3 days at a time, have never had the will power to go longer. From my extensive research on the subject, after the 3rd day, hunger ceases to exist, true detoxing begins, and the hunger doesn't come back until it's time to quit the fast, which is when you have no more reserves (fat) you can spare to lose and must eat. I have heard of obese people going on water-only fasts for months at a time and losing their food addictions as well as their extra weight, I have heard of people with stage 4 cancer using fasting as a last resort after running out of the usual options docs give and subsequently healing themselves completely. When you are not eating, digestion ceases and the body is able to concentrate on healing instead. Towards the end of a fast, after your body has dealt with major issues, I have heard of people who have had skin tags and moles just fall off. People talk about having much more vivid senses while fasting -- clearer eyesight, better hearing, lucid dreaming, tons of energy, etc. Of course, body odor, a fuzzy tongue, and headaches/bodyaches as the toxins are being released are also side effects.

Of course, the medical community considers all the above bunk. But of course, they are also in the pockets of Big Pharma, so have a lot to lose if a substantial number of people turn to (free) alternative methods. My own dad is a doc and decided to lose weight by eating nothing but plain oatmeal, canned green beans, and diet soda. He certainly did lose weight, but ignored the fact he was eating a large amount of sodium (and receiving almost no nutrition from the canned veggies), ingesting massive amounts of carcinogens from the diet sodas, and robbing his body of much-needed nutrients. Med students in the Western world learn about medicine and medical procedures, not health and nutrition, unfortunately.

What does fasting have to do with Fashion and Beauty? Shouldn't this thread be in the Food Forum, or perhaps Health if health benefits are being claimed?

In any case I am 69 and I can tell you that almost all us older folks have had to fast for 24 hours or so prior to having a colonoscopy. I've done this several times and never noticed any particular benefit from it.

You wouldn't after only one day.

No, not in my 59 years and don't plan to try it. Fasting is no substitute for healthy living.

I started fasting more than 2 years ago, and I fast all the time. Very often it's 3 or 4 days a week, when I can. If schedule doesn't allow it of I don't feel like it then I don't. But I do some fasting at least 3 weeks a month. I try to fast AT LEAST one day a week every week. (I've also done several 7, 10, 12 and 21 day fasts...water/tea and or juice fasts.)

BUT I certainly would not fast on Thanksgiving. I love food and look forward to that day, and enjoying food I have at that time of year. I can fast any time....(I suppose I COULD have those foods any time as well, but I don't. Because I don't think they're the healthiest choices. So I limit them to VERY special occasions, fewer than 3 or 4 times a year.)

When I grew up I fasted all the time and not by choice. Many times the school lunch was all we had, if we were lucky the bread shop would give us day old rolls. I was also once in a survival situation. Basically a hunting trip gone wrong. We went almost 6 days with little food but plenty of fresh water.

Hunger is not something that I will ever due by choice.
