Before the wifebeater name, they were called d@goTs as an ethnic slur following the Saturday Night Fever era.

This thread cracks me up. WHen I was a kid I considered them to be a tank top or an undershirt. When I got a little older I heard everyone referring to them as wife beaters. I never really understood that term but referred to them as a wife beater from that point on. AFter watching "cops" and other shows/movies where there were "white trash" modeling these under shirts I quickly realized where the term "wife beater" came from.

Is it a stereotype? Absolutely not, its a nickname. I own a couple myself....not a huge fan but I do like wearing them when I wear a suit from time to time. Even in my suit and tie I still refer to them as a "wife beater".

Some people take everything personally, its a nickname, get over it. Just because you wear one does not mean you fit the description of a wife beater.

I just hate the fact that guys who wear sleeveless shirts (even within their own home) are portrayed as trashy, ugly, dirty, thug like, and burdened with so many other stereotypes. This is clearly not the case. I have seen several men wearing tanks outside while running on the trail. They look like any other normal guy and fit none of the stereotypes set.

Then I hear silly comments from women about how underarm hair looks nasty and should be removed. Well, if you don't like it we can wax it off (though its kind of odd). If men do that, we are stereotyped as gays. WTF , you were the one who told me it looks nasty and wanted it off.

Of course, I only wear tanks at home in summer or while working outside when its really hot outside and don't care if I look ugly while mowing the lawn because I am going to get dirty anyways .

But the hills are snowbound and over 100 miles away. I would much rather hit the shore than drive up icy slopes.

Of course the hills here are a joke. After going on a 2.5 hour car ride + 1 hour horseback ride to reach the summit of a 16800 ft high Himalayan mountain, all the hills in America look tame & tiny by comparison.

Its an expression that isn't supposed to be taken literally.

Urban Dictionary: run for the hills
