Why do 'hipster' Gen Y 'men' think bowties are cool? (color, red)

Regular ties look professional to me whereas bowties look snobby/nerdy.

My 2nd husband was a real clothes horse and only wore a real bow tie or an ascot. Never heard of that Tim Gunn but he dressed a lot like that.

Unless they are worn with a tux, bowties always struck me as clownish and goofy looking. I don't like them, but to each their own.

I will second that Matt Smith wearing the bow tie in Doctor Who has gone a long way towards bringing them back.

I have never owned or worn one, but have long thought they were kind of cool.

Then again, I HATE regular ties. Partially because I have to wear one for work most of the time. I do not think it adds much to fashion, and is hot and restricting to wear, and flops around and gets in the way of all sorts of things. For no good purpose or reason.

I will say one thing though, I have seen guys wearing pre-tied bowties and all I can say is..... no grown man should be allowed to wear one.

In my HS years back in the '70s, more guys wore bowties than neckties to the semi-formal dances.
In the '70s and '80s I wore the woman's version of the bowtie a lot.
The bowtie originated in the 17th century and flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries.
I think bowties are COOL!!
