Yup same here. I think tall dark and handsome as olive skin tone or darker and dark hair. This basically covers 50% of the worlds population potentially. Generally doesn't include East Asians, as they tend to be paler. Tall equals 5'10 and up.

This is what I tend to think it originally meant. Back in the day, it was assumed such ideal men were white as minorities were not sought after. And "White" didn't include Jews or Italians, or those that would've fit the definition of "ethnic" at that time. They'd mean a George Clooney, Clark Gable, Sean Connery, Cary Grant, et al in their prime. The meaning has changed as more types of "dark" men are acceptable, though I would assume the hair coloring is most important (and obviously the height as well).

Carey Grant or something was probably the epitome of 'tall, dark and handsome.' I get the handsome part, but I wonder why the tall and dark part?

I'm thinking of mainstream society. Let's face it, when early literature and films were produced, the leading men the women were after, weren't minorities...and the leading women weren't minorities themselves.

Oh, that's true. Mainstream was quite racist back then.

Wouldn't tall, darkskinned, and good looking Black men be the epitome of Tall, Dark, and handsome? Someone like Dwayne Wade or Idris Elba. Just a thought.
