Mila Kunis and Bradley Cooper are two of many celebrities who often are called great-looking by the media when anyone should be able to tell that they're nothing special. Why do you think the media often exaggerates the attractiveness of famous people?
That might be true for female celebrities, but how (except for Most Beautiful magazines/specials) would overrating male celebrities benefit the media?
Duh. The same way. You've never seen sexy gorgeous men used in ads, the same way women are?
Companies use beauty to 'sell' -- whether an actor or actress whose name we know -- or a model whose name we don't, beautiful people sell products.
It used to be that there were actresses/actors and models. Now if you look at a lot of the clothing and makeup/perfumes ads, they are littered with actresses modeling the clothing and most people don't know any models at all. I couldn't name you one current non-actor model.
And I'm betting a well known actress like Julia Roberts doesn't model for Lancôme at scale. So they are willing to pay her lots of money, because her face is going to sell lots and lots of product to make them lots and lots of money.
When you don't see someone up close and you don't see how they live and what they look like everyday (and you see them always looking perfect and photoshopped), you start to think they're amazing. But if you were to meet one of these people and get to know them, I'm sure the awe would fade incredibly fast. There are some celebs that I also don't understand the hype about. For example, when Gwyneth Paltrow was voted most beautiful woman on the planet…I was like "there are better looking girls in the supermarket."
Maybe because the media has a different standard of beauty than most of the hoi polloi?
