Summer- shorts, tshirt, sneakers. Winter- jeans or cargo pants, a long sleeve shirt, sneakers. Jacket is usually thrown in the back seat. On long trips I want to be comfortable, not make a fashion statement.
If the weather isn't too cold, I usually wear a loose skirt b/c the crotch in jeans or sweats gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours of continually sitting. Moccasins or sandals (not flip-flops) depending on the weather. Oh, and plenty of sunscreen, esp. on the side of my neck, ear and arm on the window side. I've gotten some odd two-tone tans in the summer before!
I always wear stretch pants, tee shirt, and a matching light jacket with slip on shoes. The sort of thing that is sold as travel separates. Nothing to pinch and I can peel off the jacket if I get hot in the car.
My DH and I travel to Hawaii once a year and that is a loooong flight from NJ. We go in warm weather so I wear sandals and yoga pants and a short sleeve top, and sweater.
I usually wear walking gym shoes, either jeans or yoga pants, t-shirt and hoodie. If I need a coat that as well but it usually comes off during the trip.
I did make a winter road trip through the upper Midwest in snow and had my coat on the whole time. However, I usually never make such insane choices for road trips.
I had a friend who used to tell me to look very unattractive when doing a road trip alone - she'd always wear a baseball hat, no make-up, and "ugly" clothes as she felt safer that way when travelling alone - I'd have never thought of that!
