That other thread (which is really quite ridiculous) on whether women have to wear heels to be considered "real women" nonetheless leads me to this question.
Is it possible to get by without wearing heels anywhere, work, office, play, outside, special occasion etc., if you are a woman and simply rely on other shoes, or do you think it is a "must" in certain settings?
Do you know anyone actually like this? I don't think I've personally known any women who say they literally never wear heels. Most at least plop on a pair for a wedding or special event like that even if the shoe only gets to see the light of day once in a blue moon, only to go back in the box for another year or two.
Unless, perhaps you're a woman living in a village in some part of the world, somewhere that isn't exposed to "western countries'" fashion (does that exist still?), most women would find it rather hard to get away from the pressure to wear them, right? Do you know any resisters?
Yes, of course it's possible to "get by" without a pair of heels. There's such a thing as dress flats. I've never owned a pair of heels, nor have my women friends. Maybe it depends on what part of the country you live in. On the West Coast, they're unnecessary. There's no pressure at all to wear them. People really don't care what others choose for their footwear on special occasions, as long as it's within a range of appropriate (i.e. no flip-flops, hiking boots, etc.).

I've always felt that heels look silly. They're also really bad for your ankles in the long term. The average man is only 5-9. What women fail to realize is how much more attention they'll receive by not wearing heels. I'm 5-11, and I don't want to look eye to eye with a woman that's almost half a foot shorter than me.
I "get by" with no dress shoes at all, it is not required for me to try to impress others with my clothing, shoes, jewelry, hair style, clothing style or any other style.
I go for good fit and comfort and if that means I wear sneakers with a skirt then so be it, I wear sneakers with a skirt and no one cares.
I have not worn nor owned a pair of heels since I was about 23 and I am now 53, thank goodness I got smart young and got rid of all that uncomfortable mess.
