Because of bullying. Teens are already making suicides because they get judgements of their looks. There is no need for strangers to pick someones looks. Public look-bashing is not helpful. People are not nice when they are giving feedback.
It does not make any good for individual to let other people define him/her.
I hate these threads because beauty is subjective. One person's 10 is another person's 1. Also, I think people just like to be the subject of threads, which is annoying.
One positive thing I can say about reality TV is that viewers get a break from Hollywood perfection and get a chance to see what real people look like. Watch "Say Yes to the Dress" sometime to see an endless parade of women who are putting in effort to look their very best. Lots of different heights, weights, shapes, hair color and styles, skin colors, clothing styles etc. You also often get to see the young brides and their older mothers, so you know where the bride is headed, looks wise. They also feature short segments with pictures and sometimes videos of grooms, so you get to see a variety of "real" men as well. Very few of them approach "Hollywood beauty" but they're all living their lives and, at least on this show, getting married.
Sorry to say, but PhD's take too much time. I would never pursue one unless I am unable to get a job after finishing my masters degree.
Anyways, I learned how dumb it was to post pics of myself. Will never do it again and rely on my mirror to tell me how I look. If you like my physique, OK. If not, then its fine, find someone else you like. Time to chill off and focus on hitting my personal goal of 181.

Clearly you are not cut out for a PhD if you cannot understand their merits due to time constraints.
I hope this thread serves as a detterance for those who attempt to post images of themselves and create a "rate my looks" thread.
I learned the harsh consequences of doing so, and don't want others to suffer the same fate. These threads hurt both sides and are best if not created in the first place.
Commiting a mistake and learning a lesson compels me to change and advise others never to try such idiotic things.
I hope it convinces people to use spell check on their posts.
men don't really get nearly as much positive affirmation as women. I remember on another forum some female mentioned not wanting to stroke my ego (I didn't post a "rate my looks" thread, its a fitness forum and guys often post pics to show progress) and I was a bit annoyed. my position was that i accept that as a man im almost never getting compliments on my appearance but she probably would fall into depression if nobody noticed her outfit, hair, boyfriend didn't tell her how beautiful she is, etc.

My SO gets just as much attention for his looks as I do. When he went to back to school night two years ago one of the teachers actually told him how attractive he was, and asked if he wanted to go out for coffee. She stammered an apology when he told her we were married (we have different last names).

did he lose a lot of weight? does he have something unique/interesting about his look that gets attention?
I would like to honestly know why all the "Rate my looks" threads are hated on this forum. What infuriates you about these threads. I apologize for being stupid and posting a couple of these threads myself.
So Another way of turning this question back around to you would be:
Why am I in need of creating "Rate My Looks" threads? What need am I fufilling in myself that I feel compelled to ask complete strangers what they think of the way I look?
If you can examine these questions and honestly assess them, then you'll have the answer to your original question.

why would assessing those questions give him the answer to his original question? this is some weird attempt at wisdom that misses the mark.
