While both "exotic" and "All-American" looks may be well-received in metropolitan or culturally progressive cities, "All-American" will always win out in smaller, more rural areas. And considering there are more small cities and rural areas than metro cities, it makes sense, from a marketing and media perspective, to cater to the wider, majority demographic.
When it comes to women, however, there will almost always be a demand or desire for "exotic" in many areas. Exotic is different, and many are attracted to different or foreign, more so men than women, however.

If we were to appeal to the masses, then an attractive Asian or Indian guy should be highly in demand since people from both demographics make up a large portion of the world population.
I am surprised that good looking men from both races don't do well in the USA since they are both so exotic compared to other races.
I cannot believe that exxotical is used to describe humans. That should be used to describe a rare plant or something.

I agree with many of the posters here. The word exotic is extremely problematic....are we describing human beings or pets,plants,places? Why do people call others exotic? I get it a lot when asked about ethnicity. Have you ever heard anyone call someone like Scarlett Johansson exotic...no but someone like Freida Pinto does. Its pretty offensive

Sigh... yes, the "all American" look is indeed an assumptive term that evokes images of Caucasian, fair-skinned, light-to-medium haired and light-green-eyed people.
But whether you like it or not, that's the common vernacular here in the 'States. We all know this; if we want to debate its validity in the modern era, why don't we take it to the politics forum and let it turn into a carpet-bombing of opinionated ignorance?

These fashion trends tend to come in cycles. As far as women go, in the 90's, there was an anti-blonde backlash spurred on by the alternative/grunge movement, which was a reaction to the 80's blonde hardbody ideal. In the earlier 00's, what happened? Everyone went blonde again, and it seemed to morph into a weird, self-unaware parody of that 80's ideal that bordered on trashy. Now, we find Paris Hilton replaced by Kim Kardashian; when I was in Beverly Hills (for two years, up to till last September), that was the look that women were getting plastic surgery and dye jobs to achieve: curvy, exotic, dark-haired and medium-skin toned. Let's see what the next cycle is.
