Depends on how I shave.

Quick shave: nothing

Full shave, with and against the grain: Tend-Skin (basically rubbing alcohol with aspirin in it) and lotion to keep my skin from drying out or getting too oily.

I splash water on my face after shaving, and it reduces the redness of the shaved areas. I shave with only water also.

Noxema deep cleansing cream including over the rest of my face. Then after rinsing will apply only in the area I shaved Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm.

Vitamin E oil. Feels great! And it has a great softening, moisturizing effect.
Before that I used Lubriderm for probably 30 years. Lubriderm is available with a sunscreen formula.

I got started with vitamin E oil when I had a surgical scar I wanted to heal. Then I noticed the effect it has on skin in general. I have had those irritating pre-cancerous lesions on my face - nose and side. They weren't very noticeable, but the dermatologist used to blast them off at $100 a blast.
Now he can't find any. Go figure.

Why do you ask?

Hey guys I need to know what do you apply on your face before shaving (apart from shaving cream). I am looking for some sort of facial hair softner (not oil) which makes shaving a soothing experience? Any recommendations?

I grew a beard so that I wouldn't have to shave any more.
