Why do fashion designers sucker (my bias) others into buying into style and fashion -- yet they don't dress well themselves? Is it a case of creative minds who can create fashion for others -- but don't see the need for themselves.
Marc Jacobs -- wears jeans or basic pants only (he's doing a LITTLE better now -- but used to really dress down.
Isaac Mizrahi -- doesn't dress that well. Looks even slovenly sometimes.
Michael Kors -- basic sweater and slacks.
Carmen Marc Valvo - dresses "ok' but nothing special
As for women -- Donna Karan - never has dressed well really.
I know that there are also others like Valentino, Oscar De la Renta, Carolina Herrera, who always look chic.
Yet the ones first mentioned above and others are making millions pushing fashion and style on others. It just seems so hypocritical that they're telling people to really be put together -- with the hottest and latest bag, jewelry, slacks, or shirt -- when they wear khakis and turtleneck
It's about elitism, that's why. Fashion isn't about suiting the needs of the mainstream or else the average woman would be able to find clothes in her size (considering that the average woman is overweight by 30-40 pounds). The fashion industry is about setting a standard and a lifestyle that the rest of us feel obliged to pursue, whether it be we drop a lot of money or a lot of weight.
Look at their models. Even if say, the average American woman was a pretty woman between sizes 8-10 with pear-shaped figures, the fashion industry wouldn't change. They use super tall, super skinny models because it sets a standard most of us cannot reach. In the 1950's and 1960's, you'll notice a lot of models were thin but they weren't very tall or very skinny. Washboard abs weren't attractive and women's waist-to-hip curves were emphasized along with feminine faces and a "gentle" demeanor. Now, models need to look "fierce", are underweight for their height and narrower hips are more attractive.
The designers don't need to dress the way they design because of elitism.
I have always noticed that designers usually don't look like they "work in the biz" as in, the retail clothing business, but since they are creatives, artists... outside the box, if you will, they don't need to look like they work the floor at Bloomingdales. I LOVE how tan and leathery Donatella Versace is. I can't look at pictures of her without squirming.
Plus, fashion designers are looking for the next thing, not what's already available. It can interfere with their forward vision for their designs if they spend a lot of time picking out things to wear from last season's lines. A lot of them adopt a very simple personal style of dressing for that reason.
If Vera Wang wore makeup, she'd look freakishly young for her age.
I think many designers dress badly for a variety of reasons:
Very busy, and most people don't want to wear good clothes while doing physical labor.
To stand out from models and well-off guests.
To not drag down the attractiveness/reputation of their own make-you-beautiful clothes and not promote competitors' clothes by wearing them.
Why doesn't Vera Wang EVER wear makeup? She even has her own makeup line.
And when doesn't she EVER wear black?
