Let's say flip flops with shorts and a tee.I've gotten mixed feedback. Most women I've talked to in my age range (20s, 30s) say flip flops are best with shorts on a guy and good pretty much anywhere. Yet I don't know too many guys that wear them, even in the summer.
Wear whatever you like.
The only place I'd say they're inappropriate is in most larger office environments unless that office is particularly laid back.
I dunno why so many men catch hell for wearing flip flops and/or sandals. I mean, who cares?
As long as they don't have disgusting feet, what's the big deal?

There is no way flip flops look good on a man anywhere but the beach or around the house. Otherwise he looks like a post-collegiate, unsophisticated, uncaring slob--the type of guy who wears baseball hats backwards at restaurants and goes around with his pants so low you can see most of his drawers.
People, please dress appropriately. It's the mark of being a grown-up!
EDIT: And I take "at the beach" sort of loosely to mean at any warm-weather resort locale. You'd look pretty stupid wearing wingtips walking down the main street of Key West.
