Have you written any successful Southern literature? If the answer is "yes" then you're immune to all flip flop penalties; otherwise, they're only applicable if you're forging a creek during a thru-hike.
People are not okay with telling women what they should and shouldn't wear, so why shouldn't the same rules apply to guys?

Around here it's very much the norm to wear flip flops during the day or evening during most of the year. In a professional environment, no. But on hot summer days you see them all the time. There's a lot of nice and fancier type flip flops also, ones you can wear out to clubs or parties. Not just your thin run of the mill sloppy floppy.
But I also agree there's a time and a place for them, as well it's everyone's own personal choice to wear or not to wear. This goes for pretty much any shoe.

There are all kinds of flip-flops out there, too, people, not just cheap ones. There are finely-tooled leather ones, custom-made leather ones with custom arches, high-end ones. Though even those won't take you into a suit-and-tie restaurant, they're perfectly acceptable with jeans in a wide variety of environments.
