For a professional male. Conservative but not flashy work environment. Annual income is 115k/yr, household income about twice that. Other people I work with are often in a higher position and salary level. Don’t usually wear a suit but do dress nicely – wool dress slacks, nice button down shirt and tie, well fitting sport jacket.

I of course already have shoes that I’ve been wearing but just moved up the food chain a bit and the shoes I have are worn so I need new ones. What would be your price range?

Try some Allen Edmonds.. I think they're in the $300 range for a good pair and they look great and wear really well.

I agree with this. Love my Allen Edmonds. I don't wear them in the New England winter weather and keep a few pairs of Bostonians or something like that for the cruddy weather, but AE's are great.

Took the words right out of my mouth! I have two pairs of Allen Edmonds Clifton design. One in walnut and one in black due to the differences insuit colors in my closet. I got both at Nordstrom where they run about $325 a pair. Make sure you buy the shoe polish too that way you are using the appropriate color when you buff them.

The staggering wastefulness of spending $300 for a pair of shoes blows my mind. I am 69 and I don't think I've ever heard of such a thing.

There are some things that are worth paying for. For a long period in my life I went cheap on a lot of items and regretted it. I've had these shoes for 4 and 3 years respectively amd they have held up MUCH better than any other dress shoe I've owned. And I was even in an environment where I wore them (one or the other) on a daily basis. Some things are just worth the money if you can swing it.

I am happy to wear Nunn Bush shoes that cost me about $75 and last 3 years and are very comfortable from the first day I put them on. I can't imagine paying more than $100 for shoes. For me it's comfort and durability, I really don't care if they are a big name or "in style" because who ever looks at a guy's shoes?

My good friend has had a few pairs of Allen Edmonds for 6+ years now. He rotates them and keeps them in excellent shape. You can either spend good money and get a good pair of shoes that will last you years, or save some money and get mediocre shoes that you'll have to replace seasonally.

Your choice.

As my shoes are crusted with salt right now, I'm not sure that having to replace shoes seasonally isn't a feature.

I have a pair of Allen Edmonds I bought maybe ten years ago. I like them, but I don't wear them when it is wet or when I'm not dressed up. Given my location and job, this means, I've worn them twice a year.
