This my personal mental image of a combover...my dad's been unabashedly rocking an identical one for years.

IMO I like the second and fourth photos. It doesn't hurt that those guys are HOT, though.

To me a combover implies that someone has very little or no hair on top, lets the side grow long, and flips it over the top of their head to cover the bald area. It always looks awful - the hair is usually thinning and rarely covers all of the scalp, so it's very obvious that the person is bald on top, and it doesn't stay in place when it's windy. I live in a town with a lot of retirees - graybeards, we call them - and many of them are bald on top but maintain neatly trimmed hair on the sides and back. To me this is the best solution for when much of the hair is gone. It's not hiding anything, and it's neat. Shaved heads work on some guys, but not all.

Young colbert:

This guy has the same head of hair that he did in his youth:
For a guy his age Colbert has a good head of hair...BTW do you know what a combover is?

Now THIS is what most people mean by "combover":

I see pictures of him and always want to scream WHY, WHY, WHY, when you have a zillion dollars, don't you get a hair transplant if your hair matters to you that much?
Geez what IS that thing attacking The Donald's head???

What Donald Trump has is a combforward, which is a type of combover. His is a very extreme one. A lot of guys do a combforward even when they have mild recession. Because having a wide set of bangs to frame your face makes a big difference in how you look. There's a reason that guys began sporting more strategic hairstyles as they get older. It's all about making their faces look good. Bald guys look radically disfigured and unhealthy. The exception is tennis player James Blake.

Perhaps you should consider a career change to a hairdresser?

As a female, I don't like to run my fingers through a guy's hair. I love the buzzed, very cropped look or completely shaved the best. To me (and I realize this is simply my opinion), this is the most masculine look, and I love the feel of it.
