Depends on what you mean by 'older' (I'm in my 30s; she's approaching that) and 'temperate' -- we live in Japan, where it can get pretty hot in the summer, but people dress with a bit more class than in the US. Imagine American formality levels around 1960-70 or so.
On the men's side, many adult men simply do not ever wear shorts in public here, let alone things like sandals. I myself wear long pants whenever I'm going to be around other adults, with shoes and socks (much thicker than my better half's legwear) and I've never felt that this is a burden. And I despise hot weather and sweating in general.
Well that explains it. Sounds like cultural differences.
I've been spoiled by her sense of propriety; she wears stockings or tights just about every day of the year (thicker and dark colors in winter and thinner in light colors in summer) and would never, ever wear flip flops.
That honestly sounds like hell to me.

i don't understand your question. is it why women wear sandals in summer? do you want them to wear boots or what?
why they wear flip flops? because they are minimal and very easy to get in and out of.
Why do the flip flops smell? because they are made out of plastic!!! Plastic footwear smells. But the good part is they can be washed.
besides:
if there's any smell whatsoever it's because of poor hygiene. Fashion has nothing to do with it. For sandals and every other type of summer footwear there is some sort of appropriate sock that can be washed.
Leather sandals don;t smell as bad as plastic and they can be washed too.
To get the smell of dirty feet out of footwear use baking soda. I once had an acquaintance who used to put baking soda in her husband's socks after washing them. Works like a charm and you dont need much.
If you ask me, the feet need to be washed every day or several times per day, depending what you wear.
What do you wear in summer a a guy? Do you think is smells less?
I don't. I wish I could wear them, but I can't take the "toe wedgy". People have told me you get used to it, but I tried and can't. I do have lots of sandals, though.
I don't either. I prefer sandals with a strap across the foot. Those thong type things make your toes curl up after years and years of clawing up to grip the shoe. A friend had to have several foot operations because of this and her doctor told her this was the main cause. After she told me that - out went the thongs. I have weird toes anyway, why make it worse.
This thread topic is the type of thing that a guy with a foot fetish would create in order to have women post pics and talk about our beautiful feet. We see you SteakGuy...we see you.
I love wearing sandals. I look forward to the weather warming up so I can finally wear them again. I wear different kinds of sandals depending on what I am doing. I have never ever stuck my feet in someones face though. I don't put my feet on people.
Because my feet are sexy and I like to shoe them off.
