Does anyone else find it strange that there was more nude swimming in the past?
Vintage swim team pictures show women wearing swimsuits, while the men next to them are often nude. I just can't imagine this happening. I even saw one picture where *some* of the men had trunks on, and some were nude, along with the clothed women.
I just find the whole idea strange compared to today.
Only thing i find strange is that back then nobody cared but today we're all hung up on it. Perhaps we should take a page from their book and stop caring so much what others do.
I'd rather it not become a trend because people were leaner in the past, and nowadays most people's bodies are gross enough to see at the beach even when semi-clothed.
It just wasn't deemed proper for females except the *VERY* young to bathe au naturel as it were.
Boys and men often same nude if for nothing else the other options were horrible.
Until light weight and fast drying Lycra, Nylon and other man made fibers came along swimwear was often made of wool or heavy cotton knits. If you look at pictures of persons bathing then you likely see heavy and sagging wet swim "clothing". All that kept men's trunks up was drawstring , which is probably why so many went for the one piece jobs.

Yea, persons were leaner but it was often for want of food. Not everyone had three full square meals per day. On average most certainly didn't have the abundance you find today, especially if you lived in an urban area. At least in the country there was the chance of growing one's own food or hunting something.
This definitely was not the discussion I was expecting when I clicked into this thread.
This sub-forum needs more on clothes, shoes, hair and make-up and less fetish/nudist/sexist nonsense. Just saying....
Yeah i thought the OP was going to be asking where to find/buy vintage swim wear, not complaining about how things were back in the day.
