I own both kinds of underpants, and it really is a daily judgment call. Sometimes I want a little breeziness under my jeans, so boxer shorts. Sometimes, like days at work when I know I'll be running all over the office, or weekend afternoons when I'll be more active, I keep my bits more contained with a pair of briefs. It's not set in stone as a kind of principle--it's just options.
