yep, male or female, put on the ritz. male, a nice black tuxedo with gold cufflinks. female, formal black evening gown topped off with a nice pearl necklace, long gloves optional.
In a military ball, service members wear dress blue or class A uniforms while guests complement them with formal attire. Male guests typically wear dark suits with a bow tie or a tuxedo. Women wear knee- to floor-length gowns, but also have the option of cocktail dresses, as long as detailing is minimal. Patterns and bright colors should be avoided. Women are not expected to get their hair professionally done, but many sport fancy curls or elegant hairdos.
Usually there is a bit of a dress code. I am not sure if it's enforced, but I've never seen anyone break it.
Been to a few military balls myself... your date will be in his or her dress uniform and like others said, you dress for a formal affair (think prom).
A friend of mine went to one last weekend, and she wore a long evening gown. It had a low back, high in front, had a slit up the side, but you could only see it if she walked because of the fabric overlay. She posted pics online and there was a girl in a floral, knee-length summer sundress and sweater/shrug who looked remarkably underdressed in a photo of 7 men in dress uniform and 6 women in gowns.
Ours range from cocktail party attire (lbd is fine for civilian women) to black tie (long, formal gown for civilian women), depending on the ball. Male civilians can get away with a suit for either level.
