I noticed that, especially with regard to facial hair. Women get very proprietary about the facial hair on their men.
I was not wearing a mustache when I met and married my wife. We were stationed overseas when I went back to the States on emergency leave for my father's funeral. While at home, I noted that I was the only adult male not wearing a mustache, so I let the hair grow.
When I got back to my loving wife, the first thing she noticed was the new fuzz on my lip. "You left me here alone while you were home growing a mustache!"
She said it as though I'd thrown a lavish mustache-growing party. All I did was stop shaving my lip.
A couple of years ago--after nearly three decades of wearing a mustache--I shaved it completely off because of an unfortunate slip of the fingers while shaving.
"Why did you shave off your mustache?"
And at this point, I can see when a question is much more pregnant than it appears on the surface.
