Got them home, took off the sticker, and with the sticker, came off the bottom material of the shoe! Definitely defective and that's probably why they were discounted (30% off). I'm thinking they should have been at least 50% off with that defect.
I'm thinking of going back and asking for a bigger discount, rather than asking for a refund. How do you think that would go over? Can you do that at a retail shoe store??

I think you are making it too complicated. I'd just try for a refund, personally.
Take them back and tell them you want a refund unless they will give you say a 75% discount for the flaw and let the manager offer you 50% then accept that if you want.
If it's at the bottom of the shoe—who's going to know? It be akin to complaining about a stitching error on an item at Marshall's. Those are a design house/company error, not a retail one. Such stores carry surplus or possibly items that did not sell at a more established retailer. They're discounted for a reason. It's DSW, not Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus.
Do that if you want, but I'd probably wear it assuming I got what I paid for...until I eventually find something better. I'd probably care more if it were in a more noticeable area, but I tend to have the mindset that most shoes are expendable, unless you're spending about a hundred or so.

DSW doesn't mark stuff down just because it's damaged. If there is damage, take it back! They are easy about returns.
Took them back, got 50% off instead of 30%. I'm a happy girl now.
good! My previous post should be clarified: DSW does not knowing sell damaged goods at their standard "sale" prices of 30,40,50,75% off. They are on sale partially because they are a decent deal and partially because the "compare at" price is grossly overestimated (like Kohls for example). But, if anyone ever does buy a pair of shoes that is damaged, definitely take them back as they will refund you or give you additional % off if you want to keep them.
