It depends on how tall you are. If you're on the short side like I am,turtlenecks make you look even shorter.

My winter wardrobe consists of turtlenecks and jeans. Usually it's a ribbed, cotton one. I really like the ones from the Gap for the fit and quality. They make a great first layer when it's cold and a great single layer in the fall and early spring.

Long neck chiming in...

Do not care much for the traditional, ribbed variety...but looooove the lightweight and sometime sheer rayon numbers that have come out in recent years. Streamlined, modern and whenever possible either 3/4 or extra long in the sleeve. I do not roll the neck, just scrunch.
Just scored a stretch mock neck from Spiegel from the 'travel' collection (clearance/dirt cheap/had to)...was hesitant when I saw poly in the blend, but once I got it was glad I did. Like a heavier microfiber, matte and perfectly fitting (no clogs allowed). This is more Emma Peel than Brady Bunch. Will be worn alone or under wool come winter.

I hated turtlenecks when I was young, but I was forced to wear them, I would never wear one now that I am an adult. And I would never put my son on one either.

A nice tight fitting turtle neck that shows off your body is sexy. The once that are loose fitting are old looking and are un-flattering?
And what is a "fake turtle neck?" Are you talking about a Mock neck? 2 different things...

I don't want to sound like a know it all but turtlenecks have not really been in as a fashion trend since the mid 90s circa Friends era. I used to wear them then but don't now because I think they make my boobs look weird.

Love, love, love. Very much a staple.

Only fitted, fine gauge, knit ones, though. I don't like a lot of extra bulk, and a fitted, fine knit makes a long neck (which I have) look graceful.

And typically only black. Maaaaaybe charcoal grey. And def. not this time of year. Fall/winter only.

The how to wear it :http://fashionmoment.blogspot.com/20...urtleneck.html

Another clearance score (from VS), was uncertain because of the tired outfit, but in person this "lace" turtleneck sweater is gorgeous - very open crochet, black stretch-weave cotton - no cheesy nylon. Fits me better than it does her...not often that happens.
