i haven't searched the forum this, so shut me down if it has been covered to death. More than once I have heard snide remarks about "Who does think she is with that long hair? She's 70, not 20! Its pathetic, she's too old for long hair." I don't get it. Long flowing hair can be sexy at young, middle or old age, and what's wrong with silver. Or hell, dye it purple and orange and go for the punk look. More power to a sassy sexy senior. They can go for tats too if it suits their taste.

Maybe I feel this way because I live in "Keep Austin Weird?"

Maybe because I am 68 years old and choose to try to act young in heart and body myself?

If you are in your 60s or 70s and choose to look like Sinead O'Connor, that's fine too, but it should not be because it is expected of you due to your age.

Don in Austin

It is not my experience that older women are EXPECTED to have short hair.

Many have it short because it is easier to take care of.
Some have it short because thinning hair looks better short.
Mine is still shoulder length and I plan to keep it that way for a while...

You and your peers are more enlightened than some I have heard speak about this.

Mine's super short in a pixie cut and has been for at least 20 years. I'm 52. I'll never have long hair again, or even shoulder length hair - I love my hair short and spiky and so does my husband!

Long hair emphasizes the downward direction of facial wrinkles. I have enough issues without accenting them! Same reason I wear earrings slanted away from my face and avoid the really long dangly ones.

Long hair looks beautiful when it's in good shape -- not too dry, not too thin, not too brittle. This applies to a woman of any age, and I think that generally-speaking, as we age, our aging hair sometimes tends to take on these not-so-attractive qualities.

Many of us, therefore, come to the consensus that we look better with our hair short once it no longer looks healthy. This, coupled with the desire to have an "easy" style, is the reason most women end up cutting their hair as they get older.

If you enjoy having your hair long and believe you look your best this way, then more power to you... I frequently see ladies in their 60's-70's with long, beautiful hair, and I LOVE it! In fact, just today I ran into a stunning older woman with hip-length, thick, wavy, salt & pepper hair... couldn't help stopping her to tell her how gorgeous she is.

Some of the expectations go back to days when everyone had long hair, but girls wore their hair down while older women put their hair up, making it look short.

I love long hair on all women.

My husband does also, and sometimes comments on older women who wear short, butched haircuts. He always jokes that after a certain age, women like to take on that masculine, bull--- lumberjack look.

A friend in her 50s recently cut off her longish hair into a short spiked do and posted pics online...many people commented on how "sassy" it looked, I was absolutely shocked as it instantly aged her 15 years.

My mother is the 2nd oldest out of 6 siblings, and she keeps her hair a longer shoulder length and straight. When she goes out with her younger sisters with short hair, people often make comments about how she must be the youngest child, when in fact it is the opposite. Pretty embarrassing.

Yes, longer healthy hair can take years off a person's face. I encourage older ladies to wear their hair however they want and not follow any rules.

I plan on keeping long hair for as long as I can.

I like long and well cared for hair. A cute and spiky pixie can look nice on a woman with good bone structure and a generally pleasant face.

I really hate stiff and untouchable "hair doos". Permed and fixed hair that is curled and does not move, makes women look matronly.

Super short or longer. No bowl heads.
