I remember wearing them as a teenager too, in my Annie Hall phase. I wore lots of vintage men's trousers, suspenders, etc. This was before I developed my current rack-of-doom, though.
I tried wearing suspenders as part of a costume for a theme party a few years ago, and it just wasn't happening. It was not an attractive look. Suspenders and racks-of-doom do not work together.

Actually... they can be extremely uncomfortable depending on what I'm wearing and how much I can adjust the combination of the seat belt/seat height/etc. I've had the skin on my bust rubbed and chafed pretty badly by a seat belt before when wearing something low cut - and this was just from normal driving.
I keep one of those sheepskin sleeves on my seatbelt for this reason.
