What a lovely and unique way to honor your aunt! That's a tat I'd love to see. You should post pics of it.
At the time this was taken (a couple years ago now) it was still in the last stages of healing...and had some areas that required touch-up. But you get the idea of what I was shooting for there. I do get many comments on it when it's showing, which isn't often... I do keep my ink where it isn't seen in my day to day life. I get tattoos for me, not to draw attention of the world around me. This...it was me wanting to carry a reminder of her around for the rest of my life.
This is (was) my Aunt Jeanette. She died a few years ago at the age of 82. So this photo would have been taken in the ballpark of 1950 or so... Not only was it a lovely picture of a lovely woman, she was such a classy person and such a mentor to me...after having this portrait on my wall for a while, I eventually decided to have it tattooed on my leg, large, surrounded by roses. I get a lot of compliments on it when I let it show, which is rare...really it was just a permanent way to remember someone who was worth that kind of commitment from me.
Anyways, I thought of this, reading the appreciation for the kind of beauty that was appreciated in days past.
(She was not a "lady of the night" or an actress, either...of course this is a bit beyond the 1800's.)
From an artistic point of view, the photos reflect the fact that, beyond all of the trappings, fashion, and frou-frou, underneath it all the same human body's been there through the ages since the beginning of time.
In fact, that's one of the many themes of Whitman's I Sing the Body Electric.
