Personally I can't stand the stuff and I have never put any sort of perm or color on my hair, I am going gray and 54 years old and it just does not matter to me that I am getting gray hair.
No one can outrun aging no matter what they try to make it look like they can with the exception of running right in front of a train. Usually that cures the aging issue because the train has killed you.
I'm also 54.
Love my gray hair. I do get it cut and styled every few months - shoulder length is perfect on me.
But people have been trying to improve or alter their looks for centuries, so it will never end. I'm just glad I gave that process up. The hours spent in the salon chair were a pain!

I did see a young lady with that shade of grey/purple hair that looked beautiful.
Her hair was long, perfect flowing curls, good makeup. She looked stunning.
I have short hair that's cut in a pretty funky cut - very short around the ears but longer on top and sort of asymmetrical with long bangs on one side. I am 53 and I've had lots of gray in my hair since my thirties, so I've been dying my hair (at home, not at the salon) for about twenty years.
I don't mind doing it because I can go dark brown or dark auburn depending on the season and my mood. Occasionally I'll pay my hairdresser to add some fun highlights. It doesn't damage my hair significantly because I get my hair cut once every month anyway, so it never looks damaged.
It's not a matter of not wanting to "look old." It's a matter of wanting my hair style and color to match my state of mind, and I'm just nowhere near "gray" yet. Besides that, while some people look great with gray hair, my natural gray is salt and pepper - not a pretty overall gray. Blech. I like more intense colors because my eyes are very dark and I have a lot of natural pink to my complexion, so dark hair looks better on me than grayish-brownish-nondescript hair does.
I tried going a sort of golden and then ash brown to try to "ease in" my gray, but even the lighter browns looked awful on me. They looked washed out and made me feel faded too.
Yeah, just think of all the chemicals you are exposing yourself to, and of all the water and time wasted...
I will never dye my hair. Luckily I am just a man, so by the time my hair would be all silver or white, it will be gone anyway
The whole process from start to finish takes me about an hour so it's probably about ten hours a year. I don't think ten hours is a lot of time wasted on something that makes me feel better about myself. As for wasting water, I shower a lot anyways so that's not really a concern of mine. I'm not concerned about evil chemicals in hair dye either. I have real problems to worry about.
There's definitely a double standard when it comes to men going grey. I don't know your age but I'm guessing your under 40. Would you date a woman around your age that was completely grey?

I remember my mom used to dye her hair, I hated that smell
No, I am older, but it is still an interesting question. It depends on the rest of the women. I have never minded what most people seem to mind, for instance I like single mothers, I like women of other ethnic backgrounds, I like women wearing glasses, I like women with wrinkles, freckles and so on -- so why not women with gray hair?
Have been dying my hair since I was a teenager-aging wasn't even a factor then.
It's just that my hair is naturally very dark brown, and I never liked how that looked on me.
Always been open about this fact, I don't pretend this is my real hair color & I often have visible roots.
I'm 42 now (with some grey hairs), and continue to dye my hair-not to disguise/deny my age, but to make my hair appear less drab/dull.
I'm in my early 50's and have never dyed my hair. I'm a dark brunette and have always loved my hair color. I have probably less than 3% gray, and it's concentrated in one area so I changed my hairstyle to cover it up. My H has promised he will tell me when it's time to dye it when I asked. He's dyed his hair for at least 10 years, and dyed his beard when he had one.
..plus I work out and weigh what I should, so I think being gray would be weird.
So your perception is that gray haired folks are out of shape and overweight?
