I have used makeup from pretty much every brand on Earth, from cheap ones like wet&wild to expensive ones like clinique, and there is almost no difference in quality, actually I think L'oreal has the best quality. So I think the gap in price is just marketing costs.
Dont be kidded that the dearer ones put in better ingredients, on most cases they dont.... its a fancy name, fancy packaging and promises that get the cash in to pay for these luxuries.. best to shop around and buy water based foundations, mascara without talcum ... and much less chemicals in..
It's not necessary to spend $$$$ for makeup, although sometimes the formulations of higher end products are a little more sophisticated. Much of it is packaging and marketing, as the OP mentioned. In the end, whatever works best and does the job (makes you look great!) is the one to use. Personally, I stick to mostly drugstore brands and gravitate mostly toward Revlon. L'oreal is nice, too.
I use mostly drugstore makeup, but have found NOTHING in the drugstore aisles that comes close to MAC Studio Fix foundation (the dry compact). So I have no qualms spending extra on it.
I am 61, and I remember reading an article about what make-up Elizabeth Taylor had on her dressing table. (I think this was in the 70's.) It was all drugstore stuff, mostly Maybelline, if I remember correctly.)
As others have said, the only people who buy $35 lipsticks, for example, are those who are either gullible or are into this kind of instant status symbol.
I use both because higher end make up does have its benefits...bigger and more current color selection, eye shadows that are more pigmented, some offer better coverage in concealers and wider range of color(which is irrelevant to me as I always blend 2 together) . So if I can find color/shade im looking for in drug store great if not I will pay premium for exactly what im looking for, not just close enough....
Cost is relative, but Clinique isn't expensive. Other brands cost waay more: Chanel, La Mer, La Prairie, Chantecaille, Trish McAvoy, Stila, Chanel, Cle de Peau Beaute, Bobbi Brown, Natura Bisse and Shu Uemura. Some of which people may have heard of others not so much. The REALLY expensive stuff I've never heard of that's how OUT of my price point crazy it is.
I like to BELIEVE that the more expensive the more effective and better ingredients a make up contains. but I think there've been studies that show that's not always the case. Supposedly Olay's Regenerist works just as good as more expensive brands. And there may be other factors ....for example my organic store has "natural" makeup that's 32.00 for a lipstick. That lipstick may wear and look the same as an 8 dollar lipstick....but if someone has allergies or is THAT into saving the environment...maybe they're willing to pay more for it.
I think you need to look at the brand and the ingredients (amount and quality) to try to asses WHY one brand is priced more or less than another.

In some cases - packaging, advertising, and product placement in department stores.
