Not so much when young but I can usually tell an older person who have either been heavy smokers with their skin and that cough..and of course the teeth stains and loose gums means they lose their teeth early .

I can tell with a single glance. Their skin is excessively wrinkled and also - the teeth. Oh man, their teeth turn brown. And don't get me started on their fingertips.
And there's a smell. Unfortunately, I'm one of those folks with a hypersensitive sniffer, and I can smell them from a distance.
Both my parents were heavy smokers. Me and my three siblings never ever touched cigarettes. We got completely grossed out by the whole thing.
It's funny that you ask, because recently for the first time I had that thought just from looking at a picture of someone. She was smiling in the picture but she still had this look, like she's been a heavy smoker for many years.
I agree - you can start telling a person is a smoker by their 40s. And the older they get the worse they look. They get INTENSELY wrinkled skin, especially if they also love the sun.
Great. Another smoker bashing thread My fiancee is a light smoker. I wish she didn't smoke, but she is such a light smoker, I didn't even know she smoked until after we had been dating a while. A former smoker myself, I hadn't smoked for more then six years when we met, thus I can detect the odor of smokers as lifelong nonsmokers can (I think). Smoking is a bad habit, but I'm not insanely judgmental about it as many lifelong nonsmokers are. Most nonsmokers aren't saints themselves. We all have something bad for us we depend on to get through tough times in life. It just may not be as obvious as cigarettes.
