I keep seeing this and I wondered. As I guy, I would almost always (err, maybe always) avoid that color combo for pants and shoes.

I personally don't think it looks much better when women do it, but I am sure as heck no expert on women's style. Is it a "don't"?

It's a former don't. Once upon a time, you didn't mix black and brown, or black and navy. Now it's very common to do both. I don't think it looks terrible if done well. Not sure why it was ever considered a "don't."

I wouldn't wear that combination myself, but then again the only brown boots I have are cowboy boots and I wouldn't wear leggings with them.

I think it's definitely a don't, especially in May.

It's common, but black and navy usually looks pretty bad too, don't you think?

I keep seeing the brown boot/black legging combo and to me it just looks "off".

Except for maybe at a stable.

The trick is that the brown (or the blue) has to be a distinct shade to contrast with the black. Otherwise it looks like you tried to match and failed.

I actually really like black and navy, if done well.

I think it can look good, if you get the right shades, but it's dangerous territory.

Probably works better for women's stuff that menswear. I don't think any guy could pull off a black jacket with navy trousers, and the other way around is only marginally better.

I haven't seen a black jacket with navy trousers, but the navy jacket/black trousers tuxedo combo has been pretty common on the Red Carpet in recent years.

I think it's a don't. I have a coworker who insists on wearing brown with black despite our gentle teasing. It looks AWFUL. Seriously. It's a don't.
