If I were to transition to grey or white -- especially if I'd been dying it dark (good luck keeping up with that "skunk line" unless you touch it up almost daily, and who's got time for that?) -- I'd just shave it all off. Either wear a wig or go boldly micro-pixie. But that's another thread!

LOL.. Well I can assure you the skunk-line doesn't happen daily... More like six weeks but in my case I have it touch up at five to prevent that...
I also do my teeth bleaching as well, and mud mask lol... Why? Because I enjoy the me time, I earned it..
I'm 66 and feel lucky that my hair is totally silver-white, no salt-and-pepper or yellowing. It's healthy, shiny, and thick, no pink scalp peeking through like on so many my age.
I wear it very short (pixie length) and tousled, get it trimmed every 3 weeks. My hairdresser is a great help in keeping the look "current".
Like others have said, I had to make wardrobe and makeup changes, all for the better!
I have pale, cool skin tones, dark eyes, lashes, and brows which go well with the silver. I find I do look washed-out unless I wear red lipstick (something I never did as a brunette) and a whisper of blush.
I'm never without my silver earrings and I've learned to avoid pastels and washed-out colors. My closet and drawers are full of bold colors.
I'd look younger if I colored my hair but I'd also look boring. My shining silver cap of hair seems to have liberated me, I feel like I've at last found my sense of style.
I let my hair go silver about five years ago. I'm pleased with the result. I've had different reactions from hairdressers, anywhere from, "you are too young to have gray hair" to "it looks like you've had high lights done professionally."
My wife is 84 and has had pure white hair for 20 years and it looks good on her. I am bald, as I don't like just a fringe around the head look.
I look at a lot of older women and men, who die their hair brown, red, black, etc. They say they do it to look young. They may think it makes them look young, but it does not.
What dark hair does for an older person, is to bring out every wrinkle, and blemish and make them look older than they are. Same for those stupid comb overs that so many men try as well as dying their hair.
The only one these people are fooling is themselves.
I love the gray and get compliments daily. I keep my gray and white bright with a purple shampoo.
Any color can look unkempt if it's just grown long and not in a good cut or kept in a good style.
I don't know if the women who dye their hair are aware, but it's obvious they color their hair, most times! And rather than making them look younger, I think it makes them look pathetic, not good. Just my opinion, obviously.
I agree about unkempt hair. It doesn't do anything for anyone over the age of 25.
I can always tell if someone dyes her hair. Sometimes it looks good, but many, many times it just doesn't. But I do think that many women are not emotionally prepared to be gray or white.
I don't agree with a previous poster who said that any dye is a fad. Women have been dyeing their hair for generations It isn't a fad.
I at 49 I loved when it looked like this, then switch out at 50 once it went all gray... Today at 52 ... Someday I'll go back but for now I'm enjoying..
