Strangely enough, a favorite scent of mine was not a fragrance at all, but rather a hairspray!
It was a cheap, store brand, and I can't remember what it was I always got compliments when I wore it, although I never smelled the fragrance when I applied it, it jut smelled like hairspray! After awhile it developed the scent, which I noticed, too. Too bad can't remember what it was!
For gents I sometimes spray on two very old classic light, fresh, and citrusy fragrances: Eau Imperiale (made by Guerlain for the Emperor Napoleon III around 1870) and Eau d'Orange Vert by Hermes (been around for at least 40 years). Both fragrances are still in production but quite pricy.

That Australian brand in a purple can with a kangaroo has a sweet scent. I had to stop using it because it made me hungry! I thought it smelled really good though.
I have Shalimar and Tabu right now. I usually wear Shalimar. The only newer fragrance I like lately is Angel.
I used to wear Poison, but I don't know if that is old or new.
I had a roommate in college who used to drown herself in Tabu. I can't stand the fragrance since then. LOL! She used to spray it all over the house!
Well, it's not a cologne/perfume, but a body splash. Anyone remember Jean Nate'? It was a fresh scent. I've been thinking about it lately. I have to see if they still make it.
