Which of those styles do you prefer to wear, and which do you think looks better?
I have some boat shoes which are very comfortable, but I feel like they look like old man shoes, despite their ironic prep comeback a while back. Right now I'm experimenting with some basic vans which I like the looks of but are surprisingly not very comfortable. In particular, the heavy canvas on the back is ripping up my heel.
are there any other semi-fashionable casual shoe styles for summer?
I think certain individual styles of boat shoe look much better than others, but there's no question it's a classic style. "Classic" does not equal "old man" and if the individual shoes suit you I see no reason you shouldn't wear them.
Slip-on Vans and Converse are ubiquitous, relatively cheap, and always "in", but it is a very young look and not necessarily what everyone wants to go for.
I recently bought a pair of these Clarks "Slaten Free" slip-ons and I really like 'em. Very comfortable and while they're casual, as a guy pushing 40 I like that they seem just a little more "mature" than something like Vans.
Depends where you are! On the Southern East coast, loafer/deck shoes are the thing...especially for the Carolinas...
My hubby has some suede slip-ons...(don't know the brand...sorry) but they are a nice looking casual shoe. You don't want to have to wear socks, so these slip ons are the "go to" shoes!
Neither, I pretty much hate tennis shoes and don't own a boat anymore so no boat shoes. If I'm wearing jeans, I will still wear semi dress boots. If I'm more casual in hiking pants, then I'll wear a pair of Keen hiking boots. If I'm in shorts at home, Teva sandals or flip flops. If I'm going out in shorts, the leather Huaraches.

That's because they are old man shoes. Straight out of the 80's.

Boat shoes fad have been slowly disappearing this Summer. Same with wingtip-no-socks trend. I see more guys in the cities (NYC, Miami and Philadelphia) wear those ugly Birkenstocks-type of sandals but made by Campers. Yohji Yamamoto or even Prada.
In fact now most designers carry them in their S/S collections.
