When do stores in the Great Lake region start selling winter coats?
I moved back north from Arizona this spring, and I am going to need a winter coat. I don't want to wait too long, or the best selection might be picked over.

Burlington Coat Factory sells them year round. But if you're not near one you can always order them online, or just wait another month someone will have one for sale.
If you buy them when they're first sold in department stores you're going to pay more. You can always buy another one in February, when they're like 90% off, then wear it again in the fall. I used to do that a lot back in Ohio. That used to be the only way to get a good deal. Like anything if you buy out of season you can get the best deals.
If money is really an option just get a good wool blend and layer underneath it with wool sweaters. You can always get a decent one for less than $100. Wool everything. I've survived some really brutal winters that way. Hopefully we don't have a repeat of last year when temperatures are routinely in the negative for several days. Felt like it used to back in the eighties.
Oh my goodness! It's 90 degrees F out and you're already talking about winter coats!
It sneaks up on you in the Midwest. I always had last years coat in the closet so I had something to wear but if you're coming from a warm climate empty handed you should buy something. A month from now it will be 50 degrees. A month from then 20 degrees. It happens.
Sure beats not worrying about it and then only having a spring jacket when it's 0 outside.
IDK... you won't get good selection at this time of the year.
Besides, it really is not worth worrying about. You will see them in the stores soon enough.
I guess I spoke too soon. The low temp was in the 50's (F) and people are already wearing winter coats. I even saw one with the hood up! As for me, I am not sure where mine is.

Lol. I speak from experience growing up in Ohio. You'll probably have to layer until you can get a coat. IMHO layering is a better tactic anyway. Get a wool sweater, you'll be good until fall. Even a sweatshirt will do.
With the insulated layer you can get away with a lighter coat. Without one you'll be looking for a parka or anorak, and then you're looking at hundreds of dollars for something decent.
You get used to it after a while. I've worn a non insulated $100 wool coat throughout the winter season. But only with additional layers underneath. Wool socks help a lot too.
