I am starting a new job on Monday 11/2 which is in Pre-Sales as a Software Solutions Architect. I have been working in a pure techie role for 20 years and now I will be in front of customers supporting sales people.

I am struggling with how I should dress. I am not a Sales rep so no ties needed, but I need to look sharp. I am not conservative to wear dockers or Brooks Brothers or wing tips.

I need to look cool, smart and sharp.

Tips + Photos would be greatly appreciated!

So if you don't have Dockers I'm presuming you usually wear jeans? I'd suggest wearing a nice shirt (not a tee) and your best jeans on your first day. See what everyone else is wearing and then go shopping.

I'd wear a pink IZOD polo shirt (preferably in the shade of pink called Fairy Tale) and a fairly new pair of jeans.

I would get a couple of pairs of flat-front dress pants like these:

and some dress shirts.

DO NOT wear jeans on your first day. What were the people who interviewed you wearing?

I agree - don't wear jeans the first day. Buy a pair of dress pants and a nice, collared shirt if you don't have this already - every guy needs that basic outfit ready for various things that call for it. Wear that the first day and see what everyone else is wearing.

Did you get a copy of the dress code and employee policies yet?

I don't like Dockers, but I bought a pair recently at the CC Mall. They are much less "Dockerish". I think they're labeled as slim fit and more like a jeans fit. They look better than what the frumpy middle-aged, pot-bellied "relaxed fit" men where in my office.

If you "weigh what you should", get silm fit dress shirts (Calvin Klein has some nice ones), and you'll look younger/more energetic than those men who can't fit into them.

Yeah I am not wearing jeans, I know that would be inappropriate.

The interviews were all done over the phone :/ and they are flying in from the Bay Area on Monday to meet me.

I like those pants!

No I haven't but I will see what I can dig up. Thanks again for the suggestions.
