Eh...it weeds out the weird guys for many single girls. For previous generations it was guys in eyeliner and dog collars, white boy fro perms like Luke Spencer from general hospital, white leisure suits with gold chains, etc...etc...
I spent 3 weeks in Montreal recently. Great city, friendly people, but the young men seemed to be having a contest to see who could display the most egregious affectation in a haircut. Apparently it was a team sport: Team Topknot* was edging out Team Man Bun, but not by much. Team Lumbersexual was a distant 3rd, because that's actually not a bad style for men living that far north with winter almost upon us. And yes, they were wearing the tight-legged jeans with the saggy-baggy butts. Ugh.
*hair on the crown of head tied up in a little topknot, maybe like a samurai, with shaved head on sides and back.
