I see it all the time and don't get it. What's the purpose of wearing a winter coat either buttoned or zipped half way then filling in the open area with a scarf rather than just buttoning or zipping up your coat?

That's like wearing shorts with pants underneath or a headband with a cap on top. Is it really done all in the name of "fashion?"

I know for myself, a scarf makes a world's difference in keeping warm, even when the coat is zipped up all the way.

At least for my coat, I can't zip it up all the way when I have my scarf on. Having my scarf wrapped cozy around my neck prevents cold (air) in my body. When I don't bother with my scarf and zip up all the way, the cold (air) seeps in my neck. When people wear it on top of their jacket, instead of inside the jacket...this is the part I don't get.

My usual coat has an open lapel, so a scarf fills the space and keeps my neck warm. And yes, it's pretty. My favorite is a thick striped funnel-neck cowl. My coat easily closes over it, and I can put my mouth and nose into it when the wind is nasty (Chicago). I prefer hats and headbands to hoods, so a scarf keeps the wind off the back of my neck.

For me, a scarf is more comfortable than having my coat zipped up all the way. And yes, I do prefer the way it looks. Nothing wrong with that.

And my "formal" winter coat has a lapelled collar that doesn't button all the way up.

i prefer the way it looks and it's slightly more comfortable/less restricting. Also, the scarf is really protecting my neck. Some of my jackets aid in that, while others do not. So there are plenty of times that I want the jacket on my body, but don't need it zipped, but my head/neck is still cold even if my body is warm. So throwing a scarf on is a logical solution as opposed to buttoning the coat which doesn't solve my neck being cold.

I find that a scarf protects the neck area better in cold weather than a coat fully zipped up to the top.

No, it is done in the name of warmth.

I am sure if you ever tried both things you question, you would see that a scarf really adds a great layer of warmth!

I do it for fashion and function. My scarf is way softer than the inside of most jackets. And it keeps it from being drafty. And you can coordinate your scarf to your coat to add color or pattern or texture.

Some women do it partly to hide or prevent neck aging, I think. That's more obvious when not in coat weather.

Wearing a scarf does not prevent skin for getting older....
