I tend to favor handmade jewelry over most jewelry store retail. I get a lot at art fairs and museum stores.
Same here. I get most of my pieces custom made by artisans on Etsy. I don't like mass marketed items. I prefer hammered looks, silver, and matte pieces, and I also like rough diamonds and other diamond alternatives.
The colour of the metal against your own complexion makes a difference, IMO. It also matters to pay attention to how it coordinates (or clashes) with your outfit. Silver tones, platinum, white gold, iridium, and rhodium tend to look best with someone who has a complexion with bluish undertones. If someone has golden undertones to their skin, then yellow and rose gold, brass, copper, palladium or titanium would work well.
I don't care for "dangle" earrings. Way back in high school, I was playing volleyball, while wearing large hoops, and long hair. Well, the earring got caught in my hair, nearly ripping it out! Fortunately, they were able to stitch it up and looks fine, but I never forgot that. I now only wear studs or short earrings. Also, I just don't care for my jewelry to sway back and forth.......
I used to only wear "classic" jewelry, gold or silver, with either no stones or very little. Now, as I enter my dotage I'm starting to buy more colorful stuff, like this:
I cannot understand why, other than through habit, anyone would wear a watch while bathing or even a ring to bed. The latter is as unnatural for me as retiring in underwear or pyjamas

I have 2 fave jewelry shops that stock mostly local stuff. But I struggle finding the right indie jewelry. Lots is too "rustic" for me. We have artisans everywhere. You couldn't throw your shoe without hitting another handmade jewelry place. I have ordered a few things in Etsy, but I'd rather examine up close.
I did a wholesale shift from mostly silver to mostly gold. And am still building up my jewelry wardrobe. I don't do a lot of colorful jewelry as I dress in colors and patterns. It is hard to match.
